Store fit-out: 10 mistakes to avoid

1. Skipping the layout plan
Ordering furniture without a dimensioned layout plan is at once the most common and most costly mistake. In the field, it translates into gondolas that are impossible to install (posts, ducts, forgotten fire doors) and poorly sized displays. An on-site survey and a layout plan represent a few percent of the budget and eliminate most of these surprises.
2. Undersizing the aisles
A store’s main aisle must allow two customer trolleys to pass each other: in practice a minimum of 1.80 m, and 1.40 m for secondary aisles. Below this, customers avoid the aisles concerned. Regulatory reminder: circulation routes accessible to people with reduced mobility require a width of 1.40 m (occasional tolerance to 1.20 m) under the accessibility rules for public-access buildings (ERP).
3. Ignoring the natural direction of flow
The majority of customers spontaneously turn to the right on entering and move through the store anticlockwise, a behaviour long documented in shopping behaviour studies. Placing high-margin categories along this natural path, and loss-leader products at the back, shapes the performance of the point of sale.
4. Overcrowding the displays
Wanting to show everything leads to illegible aisles. Merchandising best practices reserve the zone between 0.80 m and 1.60 m in height (the "eye and hand level") for priority products, and maintain visual breaks (end caps, signage) every 6 to 8 linear metres to give rhythm to the customer journey.
5. Neglecting the entrance area
The first 3 to 5 metres after the entrance form a “transition zone” that the customer crosses without really looking: placing strategic products or key promotions there is counterproductive. This zone should be used to decompress, to guide (signage) and to reveal the depth of the store.
6. Forgetting the checkout area and queues
The checkout area concentrates impulse purchases and irritants (waiting). Sizing it too tightly creates queues that block the adjacent aisles. Providing space for queues, merchandising fixtures for the wait and a counter suited to the volumes (parcels, order collection) is part of the initial layout plan, not of adjustments after opening.
7. Choosing the furniture before defining the offer
The furniture is derived from the range plan, not the other way around: shelf depth according to packaging, permissible load according to the products (a paint aisle requires reinforced shelves often supporting more than 100 kg), specific accessories (prongs, bins, hanging rails). Buying generic furniture and then “fitting” the offer into it generates lost capacity and inconsistent aisles.
8. Sacrificing the stockroom and logistics flows
Reducing the stockroom to the strict minimum in order to maximise the sales floor is paid for in impossible replenishments and pallets stored in the aisles. Depending on the sector, the stockroom commonly represents 10 to 25% of the total area, with a delivery access dimensioned for the real flows (pallet trucks, roll cages).
9. Treating lighting and signage last
A poorly lit display is a dead display: the recommended level on the sales floor is generally between 300 and 750 lux depending on the zones, with accents on featured products. Orientation signage (categories, aisles) must be legible from the main aisle: it is designed on the plan, at the same time as the layout.
10. Postponing compliance
ERP accessibility (circulation widths, adapted checkout), furniture stability, permissible loads displayed on medium-duty shelving accessible to the public, clearances and emergency exits: incorporating these requirements from the design stage costs little. Discovering them when the safety commission visits or after an accident is expensive, both in works and in delayed opening.
