Industrial mezzanine, storage platform: what are we talking about?

An industrial mezzanine, also called a storage platform, is a self-supporting metal structure that creates an additional level inside an existing building. Mounted on posts, it doubles the usable area within its footprint without extending the building, with a clear height under the floor generally between 2.20 and 3 m.

It differs from the platform on racking, which rests on the uprights of the racking itself, and from the office mezzanine, dimensioned to accommodate workstations. Common spans between posts range from 4 to 8 m, to free up circulation routes and ground-level picking areas.

What load per m² for your mezzanine?

The service load is defined before any dimensioning, because it drives the cost of the structure. Eurocode 1 (NF EN 1991-1-1) gives the benchmarks: around 250 kg/m² (2.5 kN/m²) for office floors, and a recommended minimum value of 750 kg/m² (7.5 kN/m²) for category E1 storage areas. In practice, storage platforms are dimensioned between 250 and 1,000 kg/m² depending on the declared use.

The design office also checks the concentrated loads (racking feet, pallet trucks on the upper level) and the load transfer to the existing slab, which may require enlarged base plates or footings. As with racking, the permissible load must remain displayed on the platform.

Guard rails, staircases, anti-fall: what the regulations say

A storage platform is a workstation at height: fall prevention relies on the Labour Code and on the standards for means of access. Article R4323-59 of the Labour Code requires collective protection by rigid guard rails with a height between 1 m and 1.10 m, with a toe board of 10 to 15 cm and an intermediate rail at mid-height. In concrete terms, a compliant mezzanine comprises:

Rigid perimeter guard rails, designed to the NF EN ISO 14122 series relating to permanent means of access.
A safety pallet gate or a pivoting barrier at each pallet drop-off area on the upper level, so that the void is never left open.
An access staircase with a handrail; the caged ladder remains reserved for occasional access.
Toe boards and, if needed, anti-fall mesh at the storage areas to retain objects.
The display of the permissible load and of the circulation instructions on the upper level.

Building permit, prior declaration: the procedures in 2026

A mezzanine creates floor area within the meaning of the Planning Code. In an existing building, the creation of 5 to 20 m² of floor area comes under the prior declaration of works; beyond 20 m², a building permit is in principle required. Below 5 m², no planning formality is required in the general case.

The area created may also fall within the scope of the development tax. In a public-access shop (ERP), the project additionally goes through a fit-out dossier submitted to the safety commission; in a warehouse classified under the ICPE regime (heading 1510), it must be integrated into the operating dossier.

Finally, the platform modifies the fire protection: smoke extraction, detection and, where applicable, extension of the sprinkler system under the floor may be required by the insurer or the applicable APSAD reference framework. These items are costed from the preliminary design stage, at the same time as the structure.

Mezzanine on posts or platform on racking?

Both solutions create an upper level, but they do not meet the same needs. The platform on racking makes use of the storage structure already needed on the ground floor; the mezzanine on posts offers a free deck, rearrangeable at will.
